Emotional balance

5 May 2020

Emotional balance is part of your mental hygiene. You shower your physical body every day, but how do you keep your mental and emotional body clean?

When you are under pressure or feel out of control, you experience stress. Feelings of insecurity, sadness, anger and even panic can prevail. These feelings are related to the emotion fear. Fear has a paralyzing effect on your mind and can directly affect your behavior and your relationships. And it affects your biochemistry and therefore also your immune system.

The emotional stress you are experiencing now may have its roots in the past. This way, you can still feel angry or guilty about something that happened a long time ago. You can even project these feelings into the future, which can make you feel fear of what is to come. Buddha once said, " harboring anger is like ingesting poison." Unprocessed emotions and the thoughts you have about them can be toxic to your mind and therefore to your body.

How can you sustainably deal with your emotional household, how do you create inner peace and from there a healthy influence on your environment? There is still a lot of confusion about this. It takes courage to dive into it and practice emotional balance.

The word emotion is a loanword from French, and Means movement of mind. Emotions are Movement. A form of energy. Emotions come and go. They are transient. Emotions belong to our humanity and are a gift from nature. They are messengers: they give you insight into how things are with you. They provide answers to questions and guidelines for your future. They give gravy to your experiences as a human being. And inspiration for creation.

Being emotionally balanced doesn't mean denying and pushing away your emotions. Emotions that you suppress will continue to live on under the skin. Emotions want to be heard so that they come to a solution, a transformation, a realization, an expression. In Word, Image, Movement or an exhalation.

When you are emotionally balanced, you can experience your emotions and feelings and you are aware of them in the moment. Some people say to me, " I don't know what I'm feeling." The best thing is to listen to your body. Your body is the embodiment of your state of being and your emotions. Your body never lies. Being present in your body is a hallmark of Health. As soon as you have too much tension, are stressed and carry emotional ballast with you, you cannot be in the moment. Your bucket is full. You lose life energy so that you are not ‘present’. Your sympathetic nervous system is activated. And when there is no movement and therefore no healing, you can get into a freeze. This is a state in which you are disconnected from your wonderfully intelligent body, your emotions and feelings. You are not’present ' but 'stuck'. You no longer have room for reflection, let alone socially healthy behavior.

Your emotional life is rich. You are an instrument, just like a piano. You want to be able to live each key to experience a rich emotional life. To feel the depth of life, to really be in touch with all the subtle inner experiences, to pick up signals that lead you on your way.

To create inner peace, practices such as meditation are important. In meditation, you expand your awareness around your emotions and thoughts, placing your emotions in a broad context. As a result, they become softer. You learn to observe thoughts and emotions in practice, and the witness inside you wakes up: you perceive that you have emotions, but they are not. You are the Observer, The Witness behind your experiences.

Meditation helps you not to get caught up in a web of thoughts and emotions that guide your life. Meditation also helps you to get in touch with the pure consciousness devoid of all judgments, (wrong)interpretations, labels and associations and emotions attached to them. These can also lead to negative fixed patterns and even dramas in your life. This gives you a clearer insight into and a more truthful picture of how things really are in the deeper layer of existence. Your mind is more in control. This is healing and soothing. It is a liberation and the finest lasting gift you can give to yourself. From here you can better observe your emotions during the day and hear the message they bring. Emotions find their way to expression more easily.
